When applying to various universities, a letter of reference or a letter of recommendation is also submitted which serves as an integral part of the admission process. It is written by someone in authority like a principal, teacher, or mentor with whom you share a great rapport with and who knows the positive aspects of your academic & professional character and can translate the same into the letter. Reviewing these letters, helps the admission authorities understand your personality better and reflect whether you’d be a good fit for the university.
A few things should be kept in mind when submitting a letter of recommendation –
- The LOR needs to be short, crisp and to the point to have the best impact.
- The LOR should not contain more than 250 words.
- The LOR should mention the writer’s relationship with you and the duration of the same.
- The LOR should clearly state the writer’s observations about your positive traits.
- The LOR should carry a very accurate assessment of your eligibility and suitability.
- The LOR should also mention your significant achievements & accomplishments.
- The LOR should avoid focusing on your academic grades or competitive test scores.
- Any private or sensitive information on you should be included only if it has any relevance.
- The LOR should mention about the qualities and unique contributions that you would bring to the university.
