Statement of Purpose

A Statement of Purpose (SOP), also referred to as a research statement or a letter of intent, is written to the admission panel and addresses the professional path, ambition, academic accomplishments, aspirations and the driving force behind following a specific curriculum. Typically, this is presented in the form of an essay, although certain universities will still make it question-based. It is the most critical aspect of your submission that defines your entry to your chosen college.
Important things to keep in mind while writing a SOP –
- Create a detailed plan for your SOP and then expand on the outline formulated.
- Start with an exciting introductory paragraph that captivates the interest of the reader and keeps them hooked.
- Always share a personal experience or an anecdote that motivated you to take up the particular course or university.
- Break it into suitable paragraphs, headings, sub-headings, bullet points and categories to make it readable.
- List down your relevant achievements, accomplishments, and expertise, both personal and professional that makes you a suitable candidate.
- Focus on sharing your experiences and knowledge that you gained during your education and industry experience.
- Don’t use technical terms but use active voice when writing your SOP.
- Write about the various relevant challenges you have overcome in life in a positive manner.
- Always write in the reverse chronological order.
- Give your SOP a proper and impressive conclusion that has a long lasting impact and wrap up all loose ends.
- Review, revise, and edit your draft till it seems perfect and devoid of all grammatical mistakes.
